ISSUE Project Room celebrates the 20th Anniversary of its Artists-In-Residence (AIR) program throughout 2026 with performances by current residents and returning alumni. This anniversary season highlights AIRs whose work reflects the ongoing evolution of a much broader community of experimental artists who have helped shape ISSUE for over twenty years.

Wednesday, April 15th, at 8pm, ISSUE presents The Days Pass Quickly Immersed in the Shadow of Eternity, a new composition for sampled and live early flutes in 8-channel sound by 2015 AIR Lea Bertucci. Written for master flutist, early music scholar, and member of the legendary early music group Sequentia, Norbert Rodenkirchen, this work reaches back through the spans of history and catapults ancient music into the present. Bertucci’s friend and colleague Chris McIntyre (2006 AIR) opens the evening. As recurring collaborators at ISSUE over many years, Bertucci and McIntyre have contributed to the organization’s programs in multiple capacities as both performers and curators.

Steeped in folkloric influences, The Days Pass Quickly is a haunting contemplation of time, duration and memory that evokes the primeval and futuristic simultaneously. It premiered in November 2025 at the ZKM in Karlsruhe Germany and was commissioned for their Gigahertz Prix. Crystalline, minimal and dissonant, pre-recorded sustained pitches and abstracted melodic fragments generated from five of Rodenkirchen’s flutes (Medieval Traverso, Swan Bone, Sheep Bone, Renaissance Tenor and Renaissance Bass) are sampled and deployed across an 8-channel speaker array. Rodenkirchen plays with minimal amplification, in effect expanding and contracting the instrument from its point of live origin to a diffused, spatialized sonic environment. The piece contemplates the depths of human history through the lens of our contemporary upheavals.

Almost exactly 20 years ago, Chris McIntyre presented a multi-channel sound work in ISSUE Project Room’s silo space on the Gowanus Canal. This was opening night of the ensemble Ne(x)tworks’ run as ISSUE’s first Artists-in-Residence. Two decades later, McIntyre returns to summon a fundament of sounds with trombone, voice, synthesizer, and ZOIA box, momentarily suspending and refracting time within the 22 Boerum Pl. theater. He notes: “ISSUE’s residency program afforded me the opportunity to expand my artistic research in a career-altering way. It is still offering me safe haven to try new things, to shine light on new growth in my creative rhizome.”

Roulette celebrates the occasion of Terry Riley’s 90th birthday with two major works, generative open scores written 60 years apart. To begin the night, Claire Chase gives a solo performance of The Holy Liftoff (2024), premiered recently to acclaim, as part of her Density 2036 project. The 21st NYC IN C, our city’s longest-running annual presentation of Riley’s legendary In C (1964), will follow. Organized by musicians Nick Hallett and Zach Layton, the concert brings together a diverse cross-section of the instrumentalists, improvisers, composers, technologists, and vocalists that make up the experimental music ecosystem.

Part of a multi-event survey of Dlugoszewski’s life and work, Either/Or performs her 1965 work Lords Of Persia, a score created for the Erick Hawkins Dance Co. In music, tuning sets the stakes and the boundaries of our world. It is the carbon we build mountains with, the oxygen we breathe in, it is our environment and, within the duration of a piece, it becomes us. Tunings often resemble nature, ratios instead of generalities, cycles mirroring the cosmos, and patterns turning up anywhere and everywhere the way we see for example Fibonacci in nature. It is with that outlook then that we turn to look toward ancient musics and pieces not yet heard to find tuning, central in its crystal mathematics and ecstatic formalities shaping a whole weekend of music making. For this special search we call Darkness Sounding congregating and coalescing for the first time outside Los Angeles at 92NY, this year honoring tuning.

Legendary avant-pop icon Scott Walker’s final piece was a siren storm written for Wild Up. We are honored to bring Rubato (It: ‘Stolen Time’) for trombones, strings, and electronics to NYC, performing it for the first time outside Los Angeles. We pair the songs and lineages of Leilehua Lanzilotti’s Pulitzer Finalist work with eyes the color of time, queer Canadian composer Claud Vivier’s futurist Zipangu, and LA composer James Tenney’s celestial improvised wall of overtones Saxony to NYC for the first time in a long time.

Either/Or presents an evening of works that situate the players and their audience in a compelling dialogic relationship between notation and improvisation, featuring Anthony Braxton's pivotal and rarely heard Composition No.98 (1981) for quartet and selections from Mendi + Keith Obdike's graphic score collection Big House/Disclosures (2007).

Braxton's Composition No.98 (1981) is a pivotal work in the prolific composer/performer's oeuvre, fully realizing the total fusion of conventional and visual notation. EO brings together a special quartet to revive this rarity, featuring James Fei (long-time Braxton collaborator) on woodwinds, Jonathan Finlayson on trumpets, Chris McIntyre on trombones and euphonium, and Richard Carrick on keyboards.

At the excellent new Brooklyn venue Church of St. Luke & St. Matthew, EO is also revisiting Mendi + Kieth Obadike's Big House/Disclosures (2007), the fecundated collection of graphic scores “...inspired by Nigerian nsibidi writing, European music notation, and architectural drawings.” Big House/Disclosure was the inaugural work in the Obadike's ongoing series of multimedia works entitled The Americana Suites.
